I have the exact same problem -- brand new Memory Stick PRO Duo, in a brand new camera (Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S980). I've used it for less than a week with no problems, then suddenly it went kaput.

Now when I turn on the camera it just says 'please reinsert the memory card,' but I do that and it makes no difference. Basically the stick is unreadable. When I plug the camera into my computer via USB, nothing happens (ordinarily iPhoto opens up and the photos are there for importing). When I insert the memory stick into a card reader, computer says 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Initialize, Ignore, or Eject.'

I don't want to initialize it because I have photos and videos on it. Any solution for recovering this data? Exact same problem with me, sounds like a major flaw with this particular card, less than a week then caput. I was standing on top of the Rockefeller viewing platform in Manhattan when it happened - over 100 amazing pictures of my holiday to New York disappeared.

I took it back to Jessops where I bought it. They weren't able to access it via PC with recovery software (and incidentally wouldn't replace the card unless I let them bin the original one!) Called customer support and the card is on its way to them but my hopes are pretty much zero. These errors came from trying to format using windows explorer, computer management, or any third party software. It appears the card is shot and you have to buy a new one.

If you are to stubborn to do that, then welcome to my world. Here is what I did to save mine. This method is as last resort and you will loose all info on the card. Put your memory card you want to fix into your card reader and make sure it's plugged into your computer. Open cmd prompt with administrator privilages. (If whom ever is reading this doesn't know how to do this, you shouldn't be doing this then.) Type diskpart and hit enter.

You should see DISKPART>now. For the sake of making a mistake, type list disk and hit enter. My Disk 0 is my main SSD drive. I don't wanna mess that up! My Disk 1 is my backup drive, and I don't wanna mess that up either. Card reader has the memory stick as Disk 5 for me I see. In my case I'm going to type select disk 5 and hit enter.

Now Disk 5 is the selected disk. I'm going to clean the disk. Write all zero's to it to clear whatever issue it has with the camera.

To do that we type Clean All and hit enter. It takes awhile for this action to happen. I usually just walk away and come back later. When the process is complete we will revive your memory now. If you fiddle around on your own at this point, you'll see your memory may not show as having ANY space!
